The Founding Fathers Had It Right

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among them are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.” Those words were written 234 years ago.

What are they telling us as Americans and as Christians? They tell us that we have the right to life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness and that these rights are not given to us by the government but by God. Therefore only God can take these rights away. No government is greater than God, no matter what our leaders might want us to believe.

Two hundred and thirty four years ago, our forefathers knew that laws would be needed. They knew that just laws would be needed, laws which were based on natural law, moral law, the law which comes from God. When they wrote that “All men are created equal” they meant it and did everything they could to ensure that the government would not be able to take control of its citizens. They provided a system of checks and balances which would not allow any one branch of government to operate with impunity.

Unfortunately this is what is happening today. Our president has circumvented the Constitution at every turn. The Congress has helped him at every turn. And the third branch of government, the Supreme Court, has shown that they are not above bowing to pressure from those who seek to take away our liberties, the same liberties guaranteed by the Constitution.

They pass and the Supreme Court upholds laws which go against the moral law of God. They are not just laws. As Martin Luther King Jr. wrote in his “Letter from the Birmingham Jail”:

“How does one determine if a law is just or unjust? A just law is a man-made code that squares with the moral law or the law of God. An unjust law is a code that is out of harmony with the moral law.”

We only need to look at laws legalizing the killing of babies, the forcing of citizens to purchase goods and services which go against their moral conscience, the legalizing of marriages which are against natural law and more and more evidence we are heading to sanctioning euthanasia. This is not what our Founding Fathers had in mind when they declared independence from British rule.

As Americans first and Christians second, we need to stop this very dangerous road we are on. First we must make wholesale changes in government this November. Then we must turn back to God for guidance and change the culture of death we are in, a culture where it is okay to kill babies, the sick and the elderly, to a culture of life.

We can do it.

    Life, Liberty & the pursuit of happiness. The constitution speaks of the pursuit of happiness and the Libs think its the government’s duty is to provide that happiness.
