Leading the Way

This is the first in what I hope to be a series of posts based upon Saint Josemaria Escrvia the founder of Opus Dei. He was a prolific writer, not writing centuries ago but in the twentieth century.

You will never be a leader if you see others only as stepping-stones to get ahead. You will be a leader if you are ambitious for the salvation of all mankind. You can’t turn your back on your fellow-men: you have to be anxious to make them happy. – The Way Number 32

If you take the time to read his writings they can apply to so much of what is happening in today’s world. Many of them are applicable to “Living With the End in Mind.”

The passage I am reflecting on today is from “The Way”, chapter 1, number 32.

How many people do we know who use others as stepping stones to get what they want? They set their goals and it doesn’t matter who or what gets in the way. What makes this especially difficult for us is when it is someone close.

How do you make someone see that there is more to life than money? Success isn’t measured by material possessions or wealth. It is based on how you have lived your life. Have you been good to others? Have you used your time and resources to help others less fortunate than you? Have you been a good Christian?

No matter how much money you have you can’t take it with you. I have never seen a hearse followed by an armored car.

I remember when I was much younger someone had told me “Be nice to people on your way up because you’ll pass them again on the way down”.

As you who read this blog know my number one philosophy of life is “Living with the end in mind”. The end means spending eternity in Heaven with God.

It’s too bad there is no way to prove there is a heaven or hell but I know I don’t want to guess wrong.
