When you have a decision to make do you what’s best for you or for others? Which choice do you think will best get you to heaven?
Throughout the gospels Jesus tells us what we need to do to get to heaven. We need to love God and love each other. He also tells us we have to be like God. We need to be virtuous.
Being virtuous means putting others first even when it means holding yourself back. For example I had a chance to move to another position where I work. This would get me out of the office and back on the road.
I really don’t like being in the office all day. I don’t particularly like the work I do. But it’s important and whoever does it has to have a certain attitude to be able to do it. They need what used to be called a company mindset. This is severely lacking in these times we live in. People no longer care about where they work. It is only a paycheck to them. There is no loyalty and they will leave the moment they think they can make more money.
The job I do needs someone who actually cares about what they are doing. If they don’t big problems will appear.
So what should I do? What will hopefully help me get to heaven? Staying where I am and doing my job the best I can. Having made the decision I am happy with it. Instead of thinking about myself I thought about what the greater good would be.
Living with the end in mind.
Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” ¶ And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. ¶ And a second is like it, You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments depend all the law and the prophets.”
