It’s that time again. The time every four years when we go to the polls and vote for the best of the bad candidates for president. And if you even pretend you are a devout Catholic your catholic conscience won’t let you vote for either one.
I used to write a lot about politics. I even made a little bit of money doing it, but it came to a point where I just couldn’t follow it anymore. And as I said, for someone who tries to follow the teachings of the Catholic church, I can’t vote for any candidate who supports the killing of babies, even when they say they would never kill a baby themselves, but it is the woman’s choice.
Here is my question: If you believe in “free choice” shouldn’t the baby have a choice? Shouldn’t they decide if they want to live or die? I’ve heard all the arguments, it’s all about women’s healthcare and they have to do what is best for them and their lifestyle. Okay, this brings up another question: If you can’t afford to have a child then why are you not taking precautions not to? Yes, birth control is against the teachings of the Catholic Church but there are other ways. Abstination perhaps?
Even if you get pregnant by rape or incest which according to the pro-choicers is quite an epidemic, there are alternatives to abortion. Why can’t you put the child up for adoption? By doing that you just might allow a couple who really want children but are unable to to have any. Having worked for a short time with mentally challenged young adults I know there are plenty of people who are willing to adopt those with special needs. I can also say there is nothing quite as rewarding.
But I get it. I have never been in a situation where I have ever had to make a “choice”. I don’t know what I would do. I know I made end-of-life decisions for two of my immediate family members, and yes that is also wrong but I knew what they wanted done. Plus it was also at the end of their full lives not before they were given a chance to have one. I also have a grandson who was born with Autism. He just started a regular public high school and is an honor student. He is a member of an award-winning band and a member of the Civil Air Patrol. I thank God my daughter made the right choice and brought him into this world.
God has a plan for all of us. There is a reason for everything that happens. We are all made in His image and everyone, even the unborn should have the chance to see what God’s plan is for them. However, even though we are made in His image that doesn’t mean we can play God and decide who lives or dies.
