The Ethics of Playing God in Healthcare – Part 1

What happens when people try to play God? Does one trump the other? Who wins?

Last week the CEO of United Healthcare, Brian Thompson was assassinated in New York City on his way to the annual shareholders meeting. While it is still not known who the assassin is and what the motive behind this attack was, it was a cowardly act.

It appears that whoever the murderer is he must have thought he was God. For whatever reasons he decided he would take someone’s life. Only the one true God can make the decision on who lives and who dies.

But… here’s the problem. Again, let me say that at this time, we still don’t know the motive, but it appears it might have something to do with the state of the health care system. Every day, insurance companies play God by deciding who can get treatment or not. They deny claims with what seems to be a random set of rules that no one but themselves knows.

Was this the motive for this killing? Did the killer have a grudge against the company because someone he loved was denied a claim and as a consequence died? We don’t have any answers yet.

Let’s go back to my original question: What happens when two people decide to play God?

You shall not kill – Exodus 20:13 (RSV2CE)
