I came across an article on the NPR website about a company that is producing AI videos of the Bible. I’m unsure about this. On one hand, I think it could be a good thing, but on the other hand, it might not be.
Let me explain. A popular question asked by many people considering reading scripture is, “What version of the Bible should I buy?” I always answer “The one you’ll read”. I’m sure there are plenty of people who disagree with that and they will give me a lot of reasons why one is better than the others. And I don’t necessarily disagree. There are many valid reasons why you should read one over another. But I have always thought it is better to read one than none. If watching a video brings someone to God, then that’s a good thing.
But then there’s the other side of the coin. Have you ever seen stories about people following their GPS directions and driving into a pond? Or off a bridge or road? It happens quite a bit. I work in the towing business and have seen the results, even with our own drivers.
Someone has to program these things, whether an AI or a GPS device. Who’s to say someone can’t make a device think the way they want it to? I’m already convinced the Evil One has thoroughly embedded himself into our lives; who’s to say he won’t find a way to get into AI? He could conceivably rewrite the Bible, changing a word here and a phrase there, making it mean something completely different. No, I don’t think he can do it himself, but he can certainly get a programmer to do it. It’s something to think about.
I just wrote and posted on one of my other blogs, one that is more politically oriented. When I went to publish it, I tried to have AI auto-generate both a title and an excerpt. I received an error message both times. It was something about the AI provider that could generate either of these due to a “moderation issue.” In other words, the AI program didn’t care for the article. I guess it didn’t meet its (or the programmers’) political views. So who is to say this couldn’t happen with an AI-generated video about scripture?
Something to think about.
