It’s Common Sense

Wouldn’t it be nice if we all just got along?  There would be no war, no strife, no violence. Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just pick up a book and have all the secrets we need to do this? We do.

It’s called the Bible and you can learn from it whether or not you believe in God, Jesus or even if the Bible is true or not. Look at Romans 12 for instance. This is one of those passages that even if you don’t believe in God, Jesus or even that the Bible was written through the inspiration of God, what Paul writes just makes sense.

Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10  Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, – ESV Biblia.com

“Abhor evil”, is that such a bad ting to do? Of course in today’s world I wonder how many of us really know what evil is? In this world where there is so much “graying” of morality, where the lines between right and wrong are blurred, how can we define evil?

Dictionary.com defines devil as:

e·vil

1.morally wrong or bad; immoral; wicked: evil deeds; an evil life.
2.harmful; injurious: evil laws.
3.characterized or accompanied by misfortune or suffering; unfortunate; disastrous: to be fallen on evildays.
4.due to actual or imputed bad conduct or character: an evil reputation.
5.marked by anger, irritability, irascibility, etc.
Who defines evil? Some say it is society which does. If it does then what happens when the majority of society is evil, ev

en if only a little bit? Look at abortion, how many people no longer think killing an unborn child is wrong? Will these same people think then that it is okay to “mercifully” kill the elderly, the insane, the sick? After all it is okay to kill unwanted children, it must be okay to kill others as well.
Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all – Romans 12:17
We see this so often, we perceive someone who “wrongs” us so we must get them back. “My employer makes all kinds of money but they don’t pay me enough, therefore I steal”.  “He cheats on his taxes, I’m going to cheat on mine.”
As I said in the beginning, you don’t have to believe the Bible is the Truth, you can think it is nothing more than a work of fiction, but doesn’t what it say make sense?
Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good. – Romans 12:21
Think about it.
Peace be with you.
